Founding and Future

Cody BUchanan

I graduated from Stewartville High School in the Spring of 2011. Though a 0x Section Place-Winner, I have learned from countless coaches, research, and trial and error to build an outline that helps wrestlers in all positions in all styles. You don’t get many places in our area of the state without seeing me or someone with a connection to me or my club. We start with simple techniques and apply them through drilling, sparring, play and live wrestling situations to build competency. In March 2011, I began coaching at the Stewartville Wrestling Club during the Freestyle/Greco-Roman season. We started with only a few wrestlers, most from Stewartville High School.

Through the next few years, we would start to pick up more athletes from the surrounding area, while I traveled back and forth from UW-La Crosse to coach during the spring. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in the Winter of 2016 and moved back to the area. Soon, UW-La Crosse National Champion and multi-time All-American Mike Schmitz would join in coaching the club. While he has since taken a HS coaching job, he is still involved and consulted with.

In Fall of 2017, we renamed (or spun-off, technically) into Guerrilla Wrestling Club with the idea that our athletes come from all over as individuals in pursuit of one goal (achievement in wrestling and life) to form one solid entity, comparable to guerrilla warfare. That same fall, UW-La Crosse All-American and current MN Storm Greco Athlete Eric Twohey would join us. While he is busy with medical school and training of his own, Eric is still consulted, as well.

As of writing this, our club has produced multiple MSHSL State Champions in Folkstyle, as well as State Champions in MN/USA Freestyle/Greco, Regional-National Champions in the Northern Plains Region, a Kids’ FS/GR All-American, and more than one USA 16U/Junior Nationals All-Americans. We’re looking to help more kids reach those accolades and more. At the end of the day, it is the athletes who achieve these things… We’re just happy to help in any way that we can.

While I love watching kids achieve their goals, what really reinforces my passion for club wrestling is the bonds and relationships formed between the athletes and the coaches. Many athletes come back in the summer and over breaks in their lives to come train and help out at the club.
